Grand Final Cricket Results

What an end to another incredibly successful season for Burwood Briars! Club Champions for a record 12th season in a row and 1st and 3rd grade premiers!!!
1st Grade resumed at 3-55 today chasing Georges River’s 107 at Pratten Park and superb patient batting from Tim Rose with 43no and youngster Aidan Gardner with 31 guided the guys home 4 down and the RB Clark Cup(named after the Founder of Briars) is back home at the club. Cameron Holmes was named Peter Toohey Medal winner after taking a match winning 6-31 yesterday. Congratulations to skipper Max Squire and the whole 1st grade team, their 4th Grand Final in a row and another premiership…amazing!
3rd Grade has gone back-to-back JB Hollander Cups’ with a comprehensive win over Warringah at Weldon Oval. Resuming at 3-128 chasing 168 Harry Pounds and Michael Hannelly were rarely troubled and at 3-216 the Men in Green conceded. Harry Pounds capped off a huge season with a magnificent 102no and was named man of the match and Michael Hannelly was 38no. Congratulations to skipper Alex Favotto and the whole team, you guys were very consistent across the season and deserved another premiership…brilliant!
2nd Grade were looking to win their third SJ Mayne Trophy in a row but unfortunately fell short against Georges River. Georges River batted on today and made 211 with Adrian Dawson taking 3-28, Harry Lee 3-52 and Peter McKell 3-63 and we were in early trouble and never recovered and were eventually dismissed for 74. Well done to skipper Declan Kennedy and the whole team on an excellent season and past 3 seasons! 16th & 17th March – Semi Final Cricket Results

The mighty Briars have had a sensational weekend with all 3 top grades winning their semi finals and, like last season, all 3 grades have made it into the Grand Final.
1st Grade finished day one 5-138 after dismissing Strathfield for 86 with Brenton Wright on 83no and Simon Nardo 17no and, surprisingly, the Gorillas conceded this morning before a ball was bowled on day two! So, for the 4th year in a row, 1st grade have made the Grand Final and they will take on Georges River next weekend. Congratulations again to Maxy and the guys!
2nd Grade had a lot more work to do today to earn their Grand Final position. The 1 run first innings lead yesterday was crucial as it enabled the guys to control the game today. Heavy rain overnight delayed the start by an hour but very few overs were lost as we resumed at 2-14. We were 3-28, 4-38 and then 5-71 with Sam Cullen making a handy 22, we lost two more wickets to be 7-93 before a crucial 94 run partnership between Karl Vendrasco, with a well made 78, and Harry Lee with a patient 28no, set the win up for the Briars. When we were finally dismissed for 187 Epping were left with 25 overs to get 189. The Bulls came out of the gates fast and were 0-48 off 7 overs but the introduction of both Peter McKell and Harry Lee turned the game our way and despite some lusty hitting by the Bulls we were able to knock them over for 104 thanks to some very good outfield catching. McKell took 4-29 and Lee 4-30. Well done to Epping who fought hard across the two days and, like the match during the regular season, it was another nailbiter. The guys will also play Georges River next weekend. Congrats to Declan Kennedy and the 2s, into another Grand Final and looking to make it a three-peat!
3rd Grade had a comprehensive semi-final win this weekend. Skipper Alex Favotto had an eye on the forecast and sent North West Sydney in yesterday and it paid dividends as we rolled them for 103. We finished yesterday in a commanding position at 2-152 and we capitalised on that start today and at 2-211 the Hurricanes conceded. Fav had a weekend to remember finishing 105no and Pete Burkhart was perfect again with 52no. Congratulations to Fav and the boys, they play Warringah next weekend and like 2nds, will be striving to go back-to-back!
Another wonderful weekend, we move onto the Grand Finals, and we will look to add to our Club Champs Dave Tribolet Trophy with 3 teams(team photos below) contesting for premiership trophies. We will see you all at training from 5pm at the Briars Nets on Wednesday.
There’s only one Burwood Briars!

9th & 10th March – Semi Final Cricket Results

Some great semi final cricket across all grades today doing Briars proud!
1st Grade were defending 104 and Lane Cove resumed at 7-94 and within two overs their innings was over(video below)! Cameron Holmes took a wicket in the first over of the day and then Brenton Wright pounced on an opportunity when the tail was exposed and took two wickets in the next over to dismiss the Covies for 96. BJ ended up with 4-16 and Cameron 3-29. We then had a tricky couple of sessions to negotiate and batted well to finish 8-147 when the match was ended. Max Squire was excellent again with 40 and Andrew Jalalaty played a crucial knock of 20no…well done 1s who will play Strathfield in next weekend’s Semi.
2nd Grade had a comfortable victory over Balmain/Souths. Defending 275 the guys had to work hard to eventually dismiss the tigers for 163 with Harry Lee taking 2-21, Adrian Dawson 2-32 and Peter McKell 2-43…the guys will play Epping in next weekend’s Semi.
3rd Grade batted Strathfield out of the game, taking advantage of their higher place on the ladder. When Strathfield conceded we were 6-306 with Peter Burkhart 81no and Michael Hannelly 23no. Yesterday openers Harry Pounds 85 and Vrish Pendyala 56 set up the innings…the guys will play North West Sydney in next weekend’s Semi.
4th Grade fought until the end but have narrowly missed progressing through to next weekends semis. Resuming at 6-70 chasing 146 all the bottom order fought hard and with Lloyd Andrews leading the way with a near match winning 51 and Clarkey batting on one leg with 9no the guys fell just 4 runs short. Needing results to go their way to progress they missed out by the narrowest of margins and their season is over. Congrats to the whole team and to skipper Mark Smyck, huge thanks also to Anthony Clarke and Lloyd Andrews-who led the team at times across the year-a great effort this season guys!
In Chappelow Cup today Briars Brothers went down to Pennant Hills. We made 137 but were passed 8 down and unfortunately that’s the season for the guys. You guys had a fantastic season and deserved to go a little further so congratulations to Asita and the whole team on your minor premiership and a great season!
Congratulations again to all grades this weekend and we will see you all at training from 430pm on Wednesday…There’s only one Burwood Briars!

Burwood Briars Cricket Report: 17th & 18th February

Our 1st Grade went down in the limited overs semi-final against Mounties/Southern Districts.
We lost the toss and MSD batted first and made 129 with Benny Van continuing his great form taking 3-35, Brenton Wright took 2-14, Tommy Moffitt a surprise 2-15 and Jack Kovacic 2-31. MSD bowled very well in the conditions and restricted us to 7-92 after 39 overs before two lightening breaks ended play and we were about 14 runs short on Duckworth-Lewis, Ash Squire made 34 and Maxy 27. This was the inaugural Shires limited overs 1st grade comp and the guys enjoyed being part of the experience but Mounties/Southern Districts handled the home ground conditions at Greenway Oval better and we wish them all the best in next weeks final.
Our club is very lucky to have the best groundsmen and grounds in Shires. Last weeks massive downpour washed out a number of Shires games on Saturday and as you can see from the photo of St Lukes on Friday morning we were next to no chance of getting a 5th grade game on. But Jason and the crew did an incredible job in getting not only St Lukes ready but Rothwell Park and Ron Routley Oval as well. What an amazing job and as always we thank you!
We also want to acknowledge the 3 best scores is Shires cricket Deb Holmes, Paul Roper and Graeme Durrant who on weekly basis deliver and make everyone’s life so much easier. Deb did a double shift this weekend, you are all the best! Graeme also doubles as a photographer and below are some photos from yesterdays excellent 2nd grade win.
We are now down to the final round of the regular season and it will be a Club Championship shoot out against Warringah.

11 November – Briars v Balmain/Souths

A good day today with 4 wins and a draw across the top 5 grades.

1st Grade were defending 8(dec)137 from day one after declaring just before the rain hit last week. It was a flatter and less unpredictable Jubilee Oval deck this week so the guys needed to be at their best. Cameron Holmes led from the front opening the bowling getting the early breakthroughs and in combination with Benny Van and Alex Vendrasco the guys bowled exceptionally to dismiss a strong Balmain/Souths outfit for 108 off 51 tight overs. Holmesy took 4-12 off 12 overs, AV 3-7 off nearly 10 overs and Benny Van 2-36 off 13 overs. Huge win by 1s!!!

The 2nd Grade game never got out of second gear and resulted in a draw. Balmain/Souths resumed at 4-129 and they were never going to declare on a flat Rothwell Park deck and unfortunately we couldn’t get the required early breakthroughs. Despite taking the last 6 wickets for 25 thanks to a fine 5-59 from Harry Lee the 231 set from less than 50 overs proved unachievable and we finished 4-126 with Harry Peters making 37no and Peter McKell 31.

3rd Grade had a very valuable outright win today. Resuming at 5-91 chasing Balmain/Souths 120 the guys passed the Tigers total 6 down thanks to a fine 76 from Sam Cullen but then lost a cluster of wickets to be dismissed for 139. We then rolled through Balmain/Souths second innings batting dismissing them for just 49 with Jack Benchoam taking 6-26 and John Papathanisiou 4-19 in an excellent bowling performance(photo below). We then needed just 31 for 10 points and got there 2 down. Great win guys!

4th Grade had to fight hard for their win today. Balmain/Souths resumed at 5-121 and were eventually dismissed for 176 with Sunny Khalkho 5-19 the star whilst Will Wright was great support with 3-28 and Anthony Clarke took 2-48. We timed our chase perfectly getting home in the second last over 6 down with Will Sims making a fine 69 and Jack Harris 22. Well done boys!
Our 5th grade had a nail biting final ball win over Pennant Hills today. Bowling first we restricted the Pumas to 128 off their 40 overs with Pat Roach superb taking 5-25. The guys lost wickets at key times but snuck home off the final ball 7 down with Mick Hannelly making a valuable 59.

Our Under 24s went down in a tight one against Strathfield.
The boys toiled hard to dismiss Strathfield for 208 with debutant John Papathanisiou doing a super job taking 5-35, Vrish Pendyala took 2-25 and Ned Arnold 2-30.
The boys applied themselves well with the bat thanks to a fantastic 91 from a cramping Aidan Gardner(below), a quick fire 34 from James Threlkeld and a patient 20 by Harry McCarthy nearly got the guys home but we fell 11 runs short.
